For Carnage 11, the annual gaming conference located in the Upper Conneticut River Vally, I've passed on doing a 40k mega-event as I have for the past few years, and instead I'll be running a large scale version of Last Night on Earth - arguably the best Zombie board game out currently.
Who doesn't love Zombies?
The Game Board
I need portability, and an effective game scenario. I decided on a shopping mall board, as it should be easy to print out and wallpaper for good effect, and aren't most Zombie movies around a mall at somtime or another?
Also, due to the theme of this years Carnage, I'm paying homage to the Spinal Tap theme by putting a stage up in the board near the food court. Brains, Yum!
I got the board ready to roll, and it was a success from a gaming standpoint. Construction failed in two places - the first was the cheap spraypaint from Walmart; it simply didn't coat, time and time again. I finally had to go back over parts with Citadel, which covered the first time. You get what you pay for, but the numerous attempts at having the paint coat set me back in time at least 10 days. The second problem was with the flooring; I used self-stick tiles from Home Depot, and they, well, didn't stay stuck. Probably due to too much flex in the boards during transit.
Board Construction
Board construction started with taking three 2x4 foot 1/4 inch MDF boards for the bottom (one for each section) and than running 2x6 inch pine lumber around the exterior edges. on the middle board, I came in 8 inches on one side, and 12 on the other for structural rigidity under transport. To move these, I drilled holes on each end that accept removable wooden dowels. When in place, they lock the whole thing together, and should provide for safe transportation and storage. Here is a shot of them locked. |

And with one of them removed. Note the dowels sticking up from what is the middle game section.
I began with one end. and ripped another MDF panel down into appropiate height strips. Using those, I built a series of walls with doors and windows for the left side of our mall.
A game square here will be 4 inches (approx).
The middle section - bathrooms to the bottom, food on top. The center area will be for large planters.
Still need two more planters, but ran out of mdf board.
the last section with the grid sketched out; the major feature here will be a large stage
Resturant and shipping receiving to the left; and the stage to the center.
Stage center, mall office in the rear with two more food booths towards the front.
First coat of paint - some of Citadel's Roughcoat spray on the public "mall" surfaces.
Furniture for the food court. |
