Threave Castle |
Threave Castle (Mar 1999)Just 5 kilometers outside of Castle Douglas lies Threave Castle, situated on an island, and only accessible by boat.
Built in the 14th Century, the walls of Threave Castle are all that remain today, 70 feet tall and 8 feet thick. Outer curtain walls and 4 towers were built the following century when Threave became a royal castle, however these didn't' survive the castles destruction in the 17th century.
One particularly horrific feature of Threave Castle is a granite projection known as the "Gallow's Knob". This stonework was used by the Douglas family to hang their enemies, and it was often remarked that the castle was never "without a tassel".
It is about a kilometer from the car park to the castle along a path that winds through a farmer's fields, and admission is approximately $4.00, which includes the boat ride across. No public bath rooms available.
