"da Kr00zAda" Battlewagon

- Completed 15 May 2006- This battlewagon's basic hull was designed and built by Kr00zA, based on his interpretation of the armored vehicle seen in the movie "A League of Extraordinary Gentlemen". Due to how it's evolved, it has been officially renamed da kr00zAda!

I managed to "acquire" the hull, and as my work began on it well after the Forgeworld pre-heresy land raider kit came out, I decided to merge the concepts of the two into a new battlewagon - da Kroozawagon!

If you have time, check out the rest of the site too - including the ork army list, and the other conversions.

so 'ere we go!

Construction

The basic hull, fresh from Kr00zA's shop.
Kr00zA made the top removable, so the model can be used either closed or open topped.
I decided, poorly, to do the tracks first. I discovered that I should have waited until I had more of the side details done first, but there you are. Step one was to add a strip of plastic along the entire track surface
Than the track "shoes" were applied to the surface. I "worried" the edge of each shoe with a knife before gluing in place.
I than decided that the tracks were looking too plain, so I added two thin strips to each, a long one on top, and short one on the bottom, both centered.
I will add two rivets to each shoe later, right now this was enough fiddly work, but the effort did pay off.
With the tracks basically done, I started on the drive train. As everything was hidden, my goal here is to represent it externally. I took cues from a Games Workshop Leman Russ model.

More plasticard was added along the hull edges, both inside and out.
And diamond pattern safety tread card was applied to the back area.
Moving to the front of the model, its time to fit the kannon. I cut a hole in the existing front plate,
and than cut down a piece of plastic tubing, and hollowed out a center section to fit a GW kannon. The kannon itself had the main pins shaved off as well.
The kannon assembly mounted in the hull.
Next up was cutting a piece of plasticard to cover the entire front; this had an opening for the kannon, as well as the beginnings of the gunner's view port.
A second piece was mounted over that, and the edges worn down. I also added a Konviktz skull on the front, a view port for the driver, and his hatch.
After some discussion on the waaagh, the defskull badge was pulled off.
And instead, this drop ramp was added instead.
with a boy for scale
Next up was work on the engine. This was a first attempt on the exhaust.
And than a second attempt on the exhaust. Also visible are some more added engine gubbinz, and access doors in the cargo bay.
Finally, it was agreed this exhaust combo was the best, and will be come the permanent choice.
Some additional ribbing was added to the front ramp, and a heavier armor plate to the kannon shield.
On the sides, an extra plasticard strip was run along all edges, and the main lower axles "pinned" in place.
Some more work was done on the engine area, and an access ladder to the cargo bay.
Inside the cargo bay a few bitz were tacked on to make it a bit more interesting visually.
Not totally sold on the crew yet.
A couple of pintal mounted Big shootas, representing two bolt on big shootas makes him a bit more enjoyable.
Next up was reworking the hatch areas.
and than a cage around the engine structure, as well as a few mor worky bitz.
My bitz order showed up, so I could finally get started on the sponsons. First up was cutting off the bottom of this one BS,
and than cutting holes in the plasticard tube to fit.
The back side needs to be hollowed out so the gun actions fit. As an alternative, and probably easier, you could just cut off the barrels and glue them (pinned) to the tube.
The comleted assembly (sorry for the bad pic)
The first sponson in place, I was going for an upside down lemen russ sponson look.
And the guns do move.
The front ramp got a hinge plate, I'll have to beef it up more.
And the second sponson is on. I decided to remove the angled top, and just have flat surfaces.
Next up was riviting. I put in big (1/8 inch) rivits as axle centers, and started in on the rest of the riviting process (1/16 inch)
You can see the difference the rivits make on the tracks, the lef one has them, the right does not.
Next up was adding welding lines along the sponsons and the front armor plate.
rolled greenstuff, edged with a knife.
I also added a long greenstuff control cable from the back of the cab to the engine.
A Kr00zA style black and white shot.
Rivets! Serious rivet work began, as well as adding in some more details to the sides.
The other side got the details, but no rivets yet.
More rivets...
as well as doors and ladders on each side.
Gooba gives it a glance over.
The ramp drop chai is in place, and the model is about 90% riveted.
Kr00za shot.
The gunner was added, and is almost done.

As well as a single headlight.

Next up was to finish the long awaited sponsons. The issue was the interior gun area; I had screwed up when making them, and they didn't look that good (see the picture above). The fix? I was able to finagle a piece of plasitcard inside of the sponson that covers the gaps nicely.
They look a lot better - Thanks again Snord!
And the best part? they float inside the sponsons, so the guns still move!
On the back, I added a sill to the rear of the cabin to fill in that unsightlly gap.
A top view of the gunner and roof.
And a close up. While the vehicle gets a kustom konviktz Kroosade icon, the boy has to make due with a plain old Black Templar shoulder pad.
Close up of the removable roof, and the konviktz kroosade icon.
This is probably not a good point of view if you're wearing power armor....
Glyphs were added to the sponson sides to match the one on top.

And the new scarboyz packed in the back for a quick test drive.
Small amounts of gubbinz, and some wear and tear was added.
Not to mention a Black Templar banner trophy for the front!

So that finishes the build phase of this model. It's off to the paint shop!

Painting

Primer coat.

Rust base coat, watered down bestial brown

and than more black washedover the open flat spaces

codex gray highlighting along the edges

and a sample of the icons. I was originally going to do Templar crosses.

but I decided early on that this was not going to be a GD winner, so it made more sense to do the crosses in the Green Kroosade colors.
started in on the first attempt at daggs, and checks.

added in yellow warning stripes, and the fuel drum in the back.

second attempt at hte dags, and worked on the gunner and the Black Templar Banner.

more work, another attempt at the dags, and wiped out the rear checks

some more detail work checked out, the banner, tracks, and gunner

Riggers were added to the back
One in the doorway, and one on the rear. Note the glyph plate that was added as well

Almost done, the dags and checks are finished, glyph plates, and some more warning checks put in.

And the final work, weathered up and a few dings and bullet holes on the front banner.

The Base

1/4 inch mdf
1 inch insulation foam

Wall board plaster to fill it in, and round out the craters, after the foam was cut down with a hot knife

And the final submission
