Goobaz wreaka 1.0

- 26 January 2005 -. Well as you might be aware of, Gooba has a new mekshop under construction. To go with it, he decided he needed a new, specialized recovery rig.

The basis for this model is the 1/35 scale Tamiya Quad Tractor. I chose this model as a base for two reasons, it looked kinda orky with it's blocky design, and it's relatively cheap price - the model kit was under $12. I had really wanted their dedicated recovery model, but even eBay prices were running over $40 - and that's a lot to spend on a model just to cut it up.

If you have time and the inclination, feel free to , check out the rest of the site too - including the ork army list, and the other conversions.

Now on with the da show!

- Construction -

Here is the basic chassis up for scale next to a mark II rhino.
I am currently planning on mounting a three point crane on the back, with the top two anchors based where those two open holes are. The front left roof opening is a perfect place for a pintal mounted, grot crewed weapon.
The chassie of the model went together real easy - but I have concerns on the size of the motor. Waaay too weedy for a wrecked tank haulin' rig.
See what I mean? Here's the engine with the body - and it's almost invisible!
So now this rig is packing a Ferrarri v12 that I had to, ahem, coax onto the chassie.
Should be plenty of puling power.
The crane is meant to be a dual chain lifting bar more than a crain per say, but I'm not overly satisfiied with its progress.
The front bumper is attached, plasticard body work added, the engine lowered, and the winch in place.
The front pole up front is a weapon mount.

With a mek boy for scale.
And a looted rhino...
Gooba had to give it a test drive. The seemingly massive front blade is doing it's job - counter balance, a it lifts the rhino right up!
Krooza recommended a change in wheel configuration, which meant stretching the chassis and adding a new set of rear wheels.
I decided to move the original front wheels to the 3rd axle, and put stomper rubber on the front instead. Here's a progress picture with the new axle in place for testing.
And here it is with the rear axle secured. Note that the back of the wreka was extended, including the wheel well, with plasticard.
Not visible here is the single leaf spring that supports the added axle.
I am envisioning the bed being used to store gubbinz.
Before the added axle, the front wheels just came off the ground with a tow. Now, it's solid as a rock.
The top is still completely removable. I have left it this way for interior detailing, I may very well leave removable permanently. This is a good shot of the extended wheel enclosures on the back.
I predrilled the rivit holes along the body work
And sort of messed up on the upper left plate in the back. Green stuff should fill in the extra holes.
I added diamond safety tread to the back bed...
And the top gun/winch platform. These areas will have recessed rivits.
Next up was some small weathering/dinging effects on the plasticard, as well as some interior work. The interior floor got diamond plate, and a barrel was added.
The engine compartment for the winch was walled off, and a shoota mounted on the wall.
More dings and dents.
And Gooba can't help but try it out again, and again...
The rivits are in place, as well as the left side ladder, and a big shoota for kicks
On the other side, more rivits, and I added the exhaust for the winch engine. The regular exhaust stack will run parallel.
A big shoota
More rivits, and the back still needs a few bitz
You might have noticed a few gaps, that's because the top is still removable
Here's a close up of the inside rear wall, you can just make out the spacer plastic card used to space the wall out better and the shoota holder.
The next day found the engine shroud, headlights, "grill", and spot light on the big shoota mounted.
The left front (closest) is supposed to be damaged including the smashed headlight. A close look at the BS shows a straightened barrel in addition to the spotlight.
I'm still debating on whether or not to mount the door. Here it is just stuck in place.
And on the back I added some more armor, and another tow hook.

After picking up some plastic tube, the exhaust was finally added. Note it was bent by softening it with a match.

I also added a door mounted big shoota, which is removable (the gun) per Warboss Sean's suggestion. The door no longer looked right with the exhaust stack; this seemed a good fit.

A closer view of the gun, and exhaust. Note the cable from the spotlight of the upper Bigshoota.
Front view
Underneath, you can see the massive free-flow exhaust system and the drive shafts in place.
And yes, the top is still removable!
After some debate, I decided to add a driver's side BS mount as well.
I've started the"gubbinz" phase, first was some extra tow chains.
And a crate on the back with more chain
The interior is basically finished too, the steering wheel, pedels, and gear shift mounted.
Ah, under tow...
Spare tire with chaos wheel cover, and I replaced the homemade BS with a dread one on the driver's door.
In the bed, there's tools, grease, oil, and beer!
I added a tarp to the side, and a spare roller wheel on top.

- Painting -

First step in painting was a nice black undercoat.
You might notice the side steps added on each side
and the other hook
Step 1 - Any "old" part (non-gooba added) and the crane got a solid tin bitz coat of paint. Than a pretty decent drybrush of boltgun went over the rest.
Stage 2 - Base colors. The blue is built up from Regel blue and than enchanted blue drybrush on some pieces.
I was missing the "red head" on the engine block.
More detail being added, and a few panels brightened up..

More Details, Yellow Warning markers, and some other touches in place...

The camera throws off the colors a bit, here's a more "real" shot with the mekshop helping to counter a bit.

Weapons mounted, and main weathering completed.

Close up of the rear bed.....
At this stage, she's basically finished. I'll continue to add bitz as time goes by, but for the moment, she's ready to roll! The last additions here are the skull glyph on the wheel cover, the drivers windshield, and iron breaker bars on the back.

We now have a "kunning" plan for when the dakka-lith gets mired....
And at long last, Gooba makes his appearance.....
