5th Edition Celebration

Triple Play on the Mall

So 8 months have gone by without the Konvitkz on the battle field. The universe has been quiet in this quadrent, as the weedy 'oomie'z 'n spikey beakies 'n tin'eadz 'n fish'eads duke it out - until tonight.

Tonight, the Orks returned.

Our local game store, Triple Play on the Mall, had an overnight event to welcome in the 5th edition of Warhammer 40k. I've been having conversations lately with some ofther players, Nate Martin in particular, who have indicated that the 5th would be good for the orks, the rules themselves correcting some of the pox the 2007/08 code put on us. I'd like to publicly thank Nate for not only that conversation, but also a great document he put together on the changes between 4th and 5th. edition.

With that discussion in mind, I volunteered to offer the konvitz up as bait for the mega battle. Warboss Bobz old nemisis Zorbag agreed to join forces, and take on all comers.

I must note that this game was a hodge podge of rulesets, from 4th. edition rules and old codex ork (I demanded the use of extra armor plates) to Apocolyse and the 5th edition rules (we switched over at midnight), so it was not a good example of the new rules and or the orks in it.

My issues with Games Workshop still stand - they produce a poor product, and do it continually with disregard to their customers. Because of that, I am continuing my policy of not spending money on their products, and that means that I will not be purchasing the new codex or ruleset. But will I be playing in the new edition? Maybe.

I've migrated from a hard core GW junkie back to a gamer, and as I play games of many origin, there is no reason to purposely exclude GW, except finanially. I don't see a major return, however.

Back to the matter at hand - it was good to see the Konvitkz back on the table, dishing it out and getting smashed up in return.

Setting up the table. We decided to use the Dakka Dakka Gargant, long a resident of Triple Play's front window, as a major objective for the others. Zorbag is to the right.

Tau, Eldar, Necrons, and Beakies deployed on this end.

While on the other side, Some Konvitkz deployed. Yup, that's the Gobtress, da Kroozada, and looted hellhound, chimeras, laser tank destroyer, and in the back da Wrecka.

Facing them were a couple of Warhounds (much more effective with the Apocolypse rule set, by the way), more beakies, spikey beakies, and tin'eadz.

On the other side, lil' Krooza (Gargant), came out to play, backing up Zorbag's forces.

Konviktz infantry would take a beating from the titans on the end of the table.

Behind the maurding gargant, Konvikt and Zorbag's armies waited to counter strike. To the lower right is a nicely Mega-armored Gooba.

There was lot of firepower facing lol'Krooza. Not just tau, but eldar, vortex grendades, and baneblade hammered at the Orky construct.

But despite crushed fields and smashed structure points, the gargant began to wreak havoc, destorying the baneblade and hammer heads right and left.

Ah, the star of the show. Warboss Bob ate a few deamon princes for lunch, including a soul reaper or what ever they call that thing, before the weedy gitz shot him down like a dog.

I had won a GW regiment in a pre-game contest, and I offered it up to the git that could take Bob's head. His death was already an objective, so this certainly worked to sweeten the pot.

The result? Orks lost, but we gave it a good tussle. Bob got shot down, but, as always, Gooba lived, and the Gargant, despite having everything thrown at it, was beginning to simply destory the entire other side of the table. Still, it was game over for us.

All in all, a great night of gaming.
