WH 40K Battle Report - Orks vs Necrons

June 27, 2004

In preparation for the Boston Grand Tournament, I put together a trial 1850 point Kult of Speed list, and faced off against my friend Jeremy's Necrons. We rolled up a mission from the GT booklet, and ended up with the first - a table quarters mission that us deploying along the diagonal. He deployed first, and I got first turn!

Necron Deployment. He also had two units in reserve for deep strike.

And the orks! WAAAAAGH!

Turn 1

Pretty uneventful, I shifted my deployment by refusing the right flank (see the picture above), and opened up on his warriors. We took down 5 with shooting, including an incredible 4 out of 4 rokkits from the tankbustaz!
'ere comez da boyz!
da 'ard boy battlewagon.

The orkz used da buildingz as cover.
These Scarabs deep striked in behind my trukkz! Not a big deal, but they auto-glance on the assault on sixes - and with 4 attacks per base on the charge, they have to go.

Slow and steady the remainder of the Necrons advanced.

Turn 2

And coming at them was the might of Warboss Bobz Killa Konviktz!
The orkz continued their advance forward. In the back, we're dropping the template for the kustom mega blasta, the only hit it would have the whole game!

These trukkaz boogied up out side of Necron gun range, hugging the table edge.

Meanwhile, two wartrakks, the gun trukk, and another mob of trukk boyz turned to deal with the scarabs. After the smoke settled, two full bases were pulled off, not to mention another wound on one of the others.
The necrons fielded a very solid battle line.

Other ork shooting resulted in one warrior unit reduced to a single model - the two lying down failed to get back up.

The ork side of the table. Note buggies screening the battlewagon, and the gun trukk and trukkaz from the "refused flank". Necron shooting is deadly, and one of the best ways to beat them is to stay out of their range.

The 'etal 'eads advanced, with scarabs in the lead

And from behind!

The tankbusta battlewagon got popped by his destroyers, killing 5 of the tankbustaz as well. Here , they exit to safety behind the wreck, in heavy cover.

Turn 3

His scarabs attacked the battlewagon from front and back in turn 2, but as it had moved over 6 inches they failed to scratch it. Moving again, it dropped off a nice little package of 18 ardboyz, a nob, and the mighty warboss himself!

This ain't gonna be pretty!

WAAAAAGH!!!!!!!!!

The tankbustaz moved towards this empty (boss) trukk.

Party time, ork style!

The boyz assaulted both the pariahs, and the single warrior. In retrospect, I should have assaulted the scarabs as well.

Krumph! They made short work of the single warrior, but the pariahs are tougher stuff - toughness five means a regular boy needs a 6 to wound! I also ms-calculated, and used Bob's choppa to strike first, but came up empty handed. Else where, and not seen, he shot up my mek's trukk, killing 4 burna boyz. The survivors would move into the now empty battlewagon.

In his movement phase, he deep striked his flayers right in front of my trukkboyz. They had no guns, and couldn't assault - lets see who the real close combat specialist is!

Whack! Chop! Brought in his lord, and his scarabs, and after the next round, the pariahs were dead and his lord warped out off hand to hand.

Turn 4

The 'ard boyz continued to chop up scarabs for scrap, While bob, who had separated from the unit before they assaulted, moved off on his own. My intent was to move him and assault the destroyers, but I forgot to move him in the movement phase! Doh!

The trukk boyz dismounted and prepared to assault.

The battle wagon slewed around to bring its gunz to bear.

The trukk and the still dismounted tankbustaz opened up on the flayers with rokkits, hitting nothing.

The russ krushed a heavy destroyer with the battle cannon, and the trakks shredded a single warrior.

The guntrukk streaked across the back table edge into the other deployment zone, screened by two warbuggies.

I had failed to move Bob, so he assaulted the warriors instead of the destroyers, killing three.

And the trukkaz wiped out the flayers, loosing four of their own.

The veil of darkness pulled the warrior squad out of hand to hand, leaving Bob very, very alone. Here another Necron lord prepares himself for a charge if needed.

But as Bob was to face a full unit of warriors, and four destroyers shooting at him, it wasn't likely.

And it wasn't. He weathered the warriors, but couldn't make the 9 saves necessary from the destroyer's shooting.

These 'ard boyz consolidated their position

And prepared for a charge by the Necron Lord

Turn 5

The rokkit trukk followed the guntrukk (at far end) and the buggies into the other table quarters.

The veil of darkness dropped this squad of warriors and the lord right next to the gun trukk. It would, however, survive the shooting unscathed.

There are still a lot of 'metal 'eadz!

Shooting from the destroyers ripped apart the trukk, killing 3 boyz.

Meanwhile the remaining 'ard boyz killed the necron lord - or so they thought!

Turn 6

The buggies screened the boyz, ensuring their safety and contending this table quarter.

The guntrukk continued it's high speed run, all the what down into the far corner.

And the battle wagon moved up, and dropped the remaining burna boyz. I was hoping to tie up his warriors so they couldn't contest one of my table quarters.

Ork shooting resulted in two dead destroyers, but one would rise.

And at long last, the 'ard boyz finished off this lord and mounted back in their wagon.

Results

An ork victory! The greenskins owned two table quarters outright, and contested one other for the win. The guntrukk got blasted by the destroyers on the last turn, and the burnaz did their job and kept the warrior unit in it's own table quarter, even though they lost the combat. Speed, and staying out of his shooting range, won the day. From a victory point standpoint the orks lost

The remainder of the damaged units (2 units of 10 trukkboyz, 1 unit of 10 tankbustaz, and wartrakk with a self inflected mega blasta weapon destroyed) were all above 50% for VP purposes.

The Necrons lost

The remainder of the damaged units (2 x 12 warrior squads, 1 squad of 4 destroyers, 1 lord) each suffered casualties, but we above 50% for VP conditions.
