Finale | Orks vs Dark Eldar vs Imperial Guard vs Eldar vs Space Wolves | Take and Hold (custom) | Winner- Imperial Guard! |
Notes:
We ran out of time for our battles, and so for the finale, we decided to do a "custom" version of take and hold. Consisting of a giant 4 x 16 foot table, the objective was placed dead center, and we plotted 20 points on the table for where units would show up. Each turn we took turns rolling a d20 to see who went first, than we rolled a d6 to see which unit came in. We decided a 4 or better was needed to bring a unit in, and players got one and one only per term. Players had to roll in the sequence of HQ, Troops, Elite, Fast Attack, and Heavy Support. Dead units could be recycled once all other units were on the table.
After finding out which unit was incoming, the player than rolled a d20 again to see where it showed up (see the graphic above). This proved to be a blast, and a great way to mix up all five armies.
Turns were done in order of the initial d20 roll, highest went first. All players deployed, than all players moved, shot, and than assaulted. We decided that no ties - only one unit could be in base to base with the objective.
Even though we started at 8 pm, and quit at 1 am, we only had time for about 5 turns!
Battle Report:
The objective - the small shrine located in this piece of scenery.
looking down table towards the east. The large hill set with road divided the two tables in two.
and down table back to the west.
Oddly, and appropiately, everyone's HQs showed up on the first turn! Here the Bike mounted ork warboss gets ready to rumble.
The Wolf Lord and Retinue, despite being first on the field, ended up in a bad corner of the table (position 11)
Troops came on next, and these dark eldar got a good position.
These wolves got primo location - right in front of the objective! Their Rune Priest was perfectly sited, and was on it right away.
With the Space Wolves holding the objective, the Imperial guard sizes up their shooting.
Dark Elder Warriors appear on the flank.
Uh oh. These two warbuggies ended up next to a Leman Russ, which immediately immobilized one.
The rokkit trakk and this unit of trukkerz head hell bent for leather towards the center of the table.
Looking down range | |
More Dark Eldar make their way towards the objective.
Our Imperial Guard player got another great roll, and ended up with his HQ up on this hill top. From there, he could blast most of us away with immunity.
On the other side of the table, his ratling sniper squad showed up. They managed to tie up and put a single wound on the bike mounted warboss before he munched them up. After this tasty snack, the warboss found himself surrounded by the Dark Eldar retinue. His WS was halved, but his strenght was still a 10, and with toughness 5 (thanks to the bike) they had a real hard time fighting him. Three rounds of hand to hand later at game end, he was still standing, and had killed at least one dark pansie per round
Way down field, this venerable dreadnought and wraithlord showed up in the same spot! We couldn't have planned a battle like this!
The wraithlord proved to be too much for the dread, as the ancient armor crumbled under the wraithlords assault.
Trukk boyz showed up waaaaaaaaay down field. You can just make them out in the middle back.
The Banshees made their appearance, but they were soon wiped out by the dark Eldar retinue.
This wartrukk moved a full 30 inches in one turn before being stunned by shooting from the wraithlord. Got to love red paint and a turbo boosta!
The Space Wolves got a great drop right behind the IG command platoon. Failing their difficult terrain role, they came up short for the assault. Luckily for our wolf, we had the shooter/reroll rule, and he popped one for the wolves.
More close combat goodness. These Striking Scorpians dropped in, and right behind them, no less than 18 'ard boyz in a battlewagon. Say Hello to my little friend.
VERY unhappy scorpians, as the Dark Eldar ALSO came in at the same place, making a scorpian sandwhich.
An orbital view of incoming chimeras meeting Eldar Jetbikes.
Unfortunately for our Eldar Farseer, these banshees arrived too late and too far away to be of any use.
In a wise move, Col. Larkin backed up his troops to occupy the center of the city, denying access to the objective.
These trukk boyz made it within inches of the objective before having not only thier ride cooked, but the squad as well from IG shooting.
Remembe that Space Wolf assault? Here one guardsman sells his life dearly.
And back to the Scorpians. After a shooting round (The orks blasted away at the Dark Elder), assault was joined, leaving the greenskins definately with the upper hand.
Space Wolves and IG tie it up on the objective. No one else had troops in place to contest.
More Dark Eldar troops join in the fight against the Scorpians, and a mob of trukk boyz abandon their stalled trukk to chase after them.
Now that's a fight an Ork can love! |
