Fougères is an old city in Brittany, with a large fortress dating back to the 11th Century. The Castle is in great condition, and well worth a visit.

It is an oddly shaped citadel, following natural contours of the riverside that it borders upon. Despite it's intimidating presence, militarily it was a failure, having been sacked many times. Upon closer examination it is easy to see why, as there are numerous blind spots where parts of the outer wall are completely unobservable from the towers.

One fascinating item about it was a working water wheel located in the outer bailey.

There is a museum attached, public bathrooms available, and an entrance fee is charged.
