Blackness Castle has been a key player in Scottish history since its construction. Historians are unsure when the structure was first built, however it is known that it was burned and restored twice in the 15th. Century.
In the 17th. Century, Blackness was modified for artillery, as walls were thickened, and gun loops added to its features.
The 1800s saw Blackness used as a state prison for religious dissenters, and the castle was used for that purpose, as well as an ammo depot until it fell into state hands in 1912.
Geographically this castle is right outside of the town of Blackness, and is but 200m from the town center road. At the time of our visit, admission to this castle cost around $4.00 per person. A small gift shop and bathrooms are available.
