Known by Monty Python fans as the bastion of the French in their movie "Quest for the Holy Grail" (the first photo should look familiar to fans - just visualize the giant wooden rabbit...), Doune Castle has enjoyed a number of Hollywood attention, staring not only in that classic movie, but also in other such as the recent remake of "Ivanhoe" by A&E.

Doune Castle was built late in the 14th Century and currently stands as one of Scotland's largest and most delicately restored medieval castles.

Never badly damaged in its turbulent life, Doune's defenses are complete with a massive guardhouse, 95 feet tall at its highest point, and walls up to 9 feet thick.

Situated on a river junction, Doune uses these two bodies of water as natural moats, the third side protected by a man made earthen moat, and of course, the guardhouse.

Doune Castle is located almost inside of Doune itself, not but a 300m walk from the town center along the A84 between Dunblane and Callander, approximately 12 kilometers northwest of Sterling.

Admission fees were approximately $4.00 per person. A small gift shop and bathrooms are available..
