e stayed in Oban overnight, after having driven up from Castle Douglas. A harbor town, Oban (pronounced o-bin) is also the home to the Oban distillery and their fine 14 year old single malt scotch.
The distillery is part of the Scottish Single Malt heritage group, and offers guided tours of their premises. The tour runs around 45 minutes and costs $10.00 per person, and includes a free sample of scotch. At the time of the visit we did not take the tour, as it's starting time was too late for us.
The distillery also has a Single Malt heritage group store, where you can buy a large variety of different single malts, as well as other scotch related devices and apparel. We don't recommend actually buying scotch at these stores as they are more expensive than other local shops, however, we did buy a bottle because we had never seen the brand before.
We stayed in the Caledonian, a 3 star hotel that enjoyed nice views of the harbor and water. Unfortunately the Oban inn does not take in overnight lodgers.
