Beaumaris was designed as the ultimate concentric castle, based upon a geometric symmetry design.

Conceived as an integral whole, a high inner ring of defenses is surrounded by a lower outer circuit of walls, combining an almost unprecedented level of strength and available firepower. Before the age of cannon, and undoubtedly even than, the attacker would surely have been faced with an immensely challenging problem - how to conquer this impregnable fortress. There is little doubt that the best method would have been to starve the defenders out.

Unfortunately the construction work was never fully completed, and the castle saw little action apart from the Civil War in the 17th century.

In earlier times, the moat extended all the way around the castle, with a defended dock located near the front for shipping that has come via the river.

Public bathrooms are available. For more information, there is a great web site here http://www.castlewales.com/beaumar.html
