With the Storm of Chaos summer upon us, the Quattro Croce mercenary company, under the hire of an Empire Elector Count, aided in the defence of a vital river crossing. Assisted by friendly Dwarves, the combined forces (2000 pts) successfully held of and advancing (2500pt) chaos force of Chaos, Dark Elves, and gobbos!
A custom scenario arranged by the local game shop, the forces of good set up to defend a vital brige. The bridge was wired to blow incase chaos took it, but a destroyed bridge result would mean failure for the defenders.
We fielded 750 points, which provided us with a Mercenary Captain, a Paymaster, a level 2 wizard (our side's only spellcaster!), an 18 man strong Alcantari Fellowship, 10 man strong Braganza's Beseigers, and a small unit of 5 heavy calvary with a champion.

Here is the initial deployment of the defences. The pikemen stood fast on the bridge entrance, backed by the unerringly accurrate crossbows of Braganza's Beseigers. Empire forces included a morter on the top rampart, and a hell cannon behind Braganza. The Dwarves were only able to muster trollslayers, but they were extremely effective in tying up the forces of evil. |

The trollslayers, excited at the site of the enemy, surged forward 2d6 before anyone else. They have moved to block the advancing army. A unit of screamers passed over head, killing two slayers, only to be wiped out by a combined charge of pikemen and the "new" slayer fanatic(?) |

Anchoring their pavaises on sandbags, Braganza's Beseigers prooved amazingly accurate. Over the course of the game they shot and killed 4 goblin wolf riders, causing the unit to flee off the table; 3 of 5 Dark Elven riders, put two wounds on a chaos spawn, and pincusioned a Dark Elf sorcerous |

A (poor) view of the combined forces arrayed against good! |
Scarpia's Comments:
The Quattro Croce have proven to shine in defensive battles. The pikemen are a very effective unit, the abilty to fight in four ranks has quickly brought them respect by the opposition. So much, in fact, they are becoming primary targets for shooting. As noted Braganza and his beseigers, also a perfect unit for this battle, were amazing effective in turning back units. Not seen in these few pictures were the small unit of heavy calvary that braved the waters (on a 1d6 roll of 6, a model drowned), and rolled up the right flank. in constant pursuit of the other small unit of wolf riders.
Success, though, was led by the unbreakable troll slayers. These two units tied up the entire advance by drawing no less than 3 large units into close combat, and restricting troop movement for the side of Evil. At the end, there were still, albiet way under 50%, two troll slayer units in play! By turn five our generals had actually charged out past the pikemen, and were taking the battle to the enemy. Magic also proved ineffective for both parties, as dispell roles easily out paced the casting.
