Vianden, Luxembourg

Vianden is a pretty riverside town dominated by a massive castle. After three tries we found a hotel, and settled in around 5:00 PM. We walked the town in a light downpour, and finally found a restaurant that was open on the river (Tuesday, naturally, was rest day in Luxembourg, and this accounted for the closed hotels and restaurants). I had an excellent trout, a fish that always tickles my taste buds.

After walking a bit post meal, we found ourselves back at our hotel bar, where the locals were present engrossed in a televised soccer game. We consoled our thoughts on the weather by consuming what we feared might be our last of the good Belgian beers, and planned our route for the next few days. We called to wish Carl a happy birthday, but due to the time change only got the answering machine. We did find the German spoken in Luxembourg a nice change from the French speaking area of Belgium, as our French language skills were non-existent.

The next morning in Vianden was damp and wet, but the heavier rain held off. We walked through town up to the châteaux, which opened at 10:00 am. Consisting of a magnificently restored central keep, the outside structures were undergoing additional renovation and upkeep. We spent an hour inside, touring its many great halls and chambers. Of special note was a two story circular chapel, complete with amazing acoustics, and a massive storage cellar underneath the main keep.

The castle is open all year, and and entrance fee is charged. Public bathrooms are available.
