D-Day Beaches (Normandy)

In the spring of 2001, we visited the D-Day Beaches of Normandy. Very, very impressive. We strongly recommend you visit them if you can, not only for the historical impact, but in the wake of the September 11th. terrorist attacks, from the viewpoint of the cost of freedom.

Being somewhat of a history buff, this was an area that I had always wanted to visit, and despite my stay there cut short by less interested fellow travelers, I greatly enjoyed it and would like to return.

German heavy gun bunkers overlooking the beaches.

Close of up above, by my calculations a 150mm gun.
Command Bunker for the Germans. This same bunker was filmed in "The Longest Day."

A shot of the "Mulberry" artificial harbor put up by the English. The breakwaters and docks were specially constructed concrete barges that were sunk on pupose. They are still there after 50 years.

The Ohama Beach cemetary is a sobering site, regardless of your country. Generals are buried next to privates, Admirals next to seamen. If you go to this area, please stop and honor those who sacrificed their lives in the name of freedom.
