The Caribbean
Caribbean Sea, EarthNotes: The Caribbean has a lot to offer travelers, and due to it's close proximity to the United States, it is a nice and short flight from the USA. Even in winter the temperatures are nice and warm, something of great importance to those of us who live in the North East. The local folk are very friendly and informative; they came to realize years ago when the sugar and fruit crops went downhill that tourism is their only real economy, and they do what they can to make that as sucessful as possible.
Currently our biggest complaints are with the cuisine. Not becuase it's bad, but because it's very hard to find local dishes. Most resturants tend to focus on continental style foods, french, steak, etc., and finding true local foods (like goat stew, or even local fish) can be difficult. We do blame this more on tourists though, that are unwilling to sample outside of their food comfort zone.
Recommendations: S-Activities are the whole reason to go to the Caribbean. What are S-Activities? Sun, snorkling, swimming....you get the idea. Take lots of sun screen and bug spray, especially if you go like we do in the winter time - that's the rainy season in the islands, and the bugs can get bad at night - compounded by the fact that many resorts don't have screens.
We take our own snorkel gear, but you can easily rent the things you need. We buy the cheap $15 underwater camera from Kodak, and while not a substitute for high end camera gear, they work well enough (all of the underwater pictures shown were taken with one).
