Rivets 101!

This question, beyond all others, comes up the most. So how, exactly does Gooba make rivets? Lets take a look at a few options available to us.

Method 1: Spear Hafts.

Carefully cut spears from fantasy sprues, or plastic rod

Pros: cheap, if you can get the materials for little cost.

Cons: hard to cut even or regular rivets, time consuming.

Supplies required:

  • sharp knife
  • glue
  • spear hafts/plastic rod
Source Materials Example: Da Dakka lith

Method 2: Purchased Rivets

Purchase rivets from model supply company. Grandt Line has the best ones out there.

Pros: premade, uniform, and accurate.

Cons: expensive, time consuming. They actually look like real rivits with real shafts, and for best results you should drill a small hole for each before applying.

Supplies required:

  • sharp knife
  • glue
  • packages of rivets
  • Pin Vice (?)

Source Materials Example: da hellhound

Method 3: Punched Rivets

Using a punch (either a leather, or craft punch), make rivets out of sheet plasticard

Pros: fast, and uniform sized rivets

Cons: cost of tools and materials

Supplies required:

  • sharp knife
  • glue
  • sheet plastic (styrene)
  • leather or craft punch
Source Materials Example: da Kr00zAda

Method 4: Sunken Rivets

Using a pin vice, drill shallow holes to represent sunken rivets

Pros: fast and cheap. The only cost is for the pin vice.

Cons: only really prefered for certain applications, such as aircraft, or areas where a superficial rivet would be undesireable.

Supplies required:

  • Pin Vice
Source Materials Example: Fighta Bomma

How to apply rivets to models.

I put a drop of superglue onto a card, and carefully "pick up" (read stab) each rivit with the tip of a sharp knife. Dipping it in the glue, the rivet is held in place until it sticks. Often times you have to roll the knife off the rivit to avoid pulling it off.

I hope you find this usefull. - Scarpia
