We stayed in Castle Douglas on March 1999 as it seemed a good stopping point between our days journeys. We had come from York England that morning, and were to press on to Oban the next day.

Located not far from Castle Douglas is Threave Castle, as well as the Threave gardens, magnificent public gardens that overlook a loch and the town of Castle Douglas itself.

We stayed at the Urr Valley Hotel, a hunting lodge converted to the tourist trade, and enjoyed not only our stay but the food as well. Dinner was served (we were alone) in the main dining room, and to our delight they had a single malt scotch selection that was outstanding. This hotel was additionally staffed by an old black lab named Cassie, who despite the management's desires to restrict her diet, manages to do quite well from the guests.
