In order to get to Loch Doon Castle you have to be willing to throw caution to the wind, as it is a 15 kilometer along a one lane road that winds though the countryside along the Loch. To get there, leave Castle Douglas and head north along the A 713. The turn off is marked, and is located about 10 kilometers before Dalmellington.
Originally built on a rocky island in the middle of the loch in the 13th Century, the remains of Loch Doon Castle were removed and rebuilt on the shore during the 1930's, due to a new damn being built on the Loch. At low water you can still see the keep foundation on the island, as only the outer curtain walls were transplanted. These walls were originally over 25 feet tall, and averaged around 9 feet thick.
No admission is charged for this castle, nor are any bathrooms available. Open year round.
