Phase III.5 Construction Continued!
We ended up taking off most of November and December. We just found with the holiday season, and other responsibilites (like 4! house guests in early December) we just didn't have the time to devote to the project. So we took the time off, and are back at work in 2004!
Our first thing back on the job was laying the concrete board underlayment. A thin coat of thinset gets put down first, than the board is screwed to the subfloor. After it cured for a day, we started putting up the backerboard along the lower 1/2 the wall. (January 13, 2004) |
|
Our current plan is to come up the wall a fair amount with tile, hence the backerboard. Regardless of the finish, it will be nice to have a waterproof liner along the bottom part of the room (January 13, 2004)
Slowly but steadily, we are getting the sheetrock into place in the bathroom. (January 20, 2004)
Amazingly, it is beginning to look like a real room! (January 20, 2004)
Sheetrock delivery. -19 freakin' degrees below zero. Nice. (January 28, 2004)
Back to work upstairs. The back wall behind the vanity is up. (January 28, 2004)
And the first archway around the tub. (January 28, 2004)
Karen continues the mudding. (February 1, 2004)
We had to increase the height of the tub entry in order to hide the shower curtain rod. (February 1, 2004)
Making an arch. Score "carefully" the back of the sheetrock at one inch intervals along the length of the curve. (February 1, 2004)
Making an arch. "Carefully" break the sheetrock along the cuts so it will bend like this. (February 1, 2004)
Making an arch. Pinned in place with clamps, we checked for length before applying liquid nails and screwing it into position.. (February 1, 2004)
Making an arch. Here is a good cross section - lumber framing, plywood arch support, sheetrock, flexible corner bead, plaster. (February 1, 2004)
Making an arch. In order to get the arches right, after you install the center run,cut wallboard to fit length wise. Holding it in place, trace out the line you need to cut. A roto tool makes this easy. (February 1, 2004)
Making an arch. Here are the arches with the corner bead up. (February 1, 2004)
Making an arch. And with the inside corners taped. (February 1, 2004)
Here is the inside of the arch nearest the vanity. We decided to use concrete board up the sides as they might get wet. (February 1, 2004)
Here's the shower enclosure, almost done. (February 1, 2004)
Karen works on the posts.. (February 1, 2004)
Can't get enough of these arches. (February 1, 2004)
The bathroom is as completely taped as it can be; we'll let it dry and sand it domani. (February 1, 2004)
We haven't posted any updates lately, because we were just sanding, plastering, sanding, plastering, etc. But today we primed the bathroom - and here are the results. (February 21, 2004)
We are very pleased with how the arches are turning out. (February 21, 2004)
We had more sheetrock delivered, and we were able to do the ceiling in the office area. (February 21, 2004)
With the beam exposed, we have another! plastering challange. (February 21, 2004)
Our friend Jason came over, and helped string the 10 foot panels across the old staircase opening. We can't tell you how happy we are to have all that loose insulation covered up! (February 24, 2004)
Besides basic aesthetics, the beam also works to break up the two ceilings in the main room/office area. (February 24, 2004)
Karen has finished up in the bathroom, and she helped me hang some more sheetrock, and tape seams. (March 8, 2004)
(March 8, 2004) | |
After attempting to hang a single 10 foot piece a solo, and having the section snap in my face, I waited until Jason could help hang pieces again on the ceiling. (March 10, 2004)
I had spent over an hour cutting out a single piece to fit the attic trap, the notched wall, and one of the can lights. That was the piece that got busted, and we decided that despite the increased taping, four smaller pieces were a better idea. (March 10, 2004)
We're sheetrock hanging fools! With the celing up, were were able to get the outer bathroom wall in place. (March 11, 2004)
and this other small wall (closet side). Tonight, its a home depot run! (March 11, 2004)
Well the majority of the great room/office is now sheetrocked. (March 14, 2004)
Looking back towards the bedroom. (March 11, 2004)
Bathroom wall, and door to the bedroom. (March 11, 2004)
The closet(March 11, 2004)
And the bathroom itself is looking awesome. (March 11, 2004)
With the majority of the other room sheetrocked, and Karen busy taping, I started in on demolishing the bedroom ceiling. We were just going to go over it, but than decided it would be easier to just do it from scratch. (March 15, 2004)
