Dunstaffnage Castle is located just north of Oban along the A 85. Situated on a small spit of land between the Sound of Mull and the Firth of Lorne, Dunstaffnage occupies an obviously defensible location of importance.
Originally built in the 13th Century, Dunstaffnage has walls that come close to 10 feet thick, and run over 60 feet high. The castle follows the irregular pattern of the rock it was built, anchored by three massive round towers. In the 16th Century a new guardhouse was added, strengthening Dunstaffnage's already legendary defenses.
About 300m from the car park, it is a beautiful stroll to the castle, along the Firth of Lorne. Located about 500m away from the castle, this time along the Sound of Mull, lies the ruins of a small chapel and graveyard.
Admission fees were approximately $4.00 per person. A small gift shop and bathrooms are available.
