Harlech Castle, Wales |
Harlech castle, along Conway, Beaumaris, and Caerneavon, is one of Edward the 1sts great castles of Welsh Conquest. Edward built these castles to subdue the local Welsh population and squash any potential uprising. Ultimately successful, these castles are each unique owing to their geographical location.
Harlech was built on the edge of the water, high on a promontory cliff. Today, the water has receded almost a kilometer from the base of the cliff that Harlech resides on. There is a small town that surrounds the castle, providing all the necessary travel and tourist materials (local crafts, film, drinks, book, and guides).
For more information, there is a good web site here - http://www.castlewales.com/harlech.html or the town site itself - http://www.harlech.com/ which includes important information such as hours of operation for the historical site.
