Probably founded by the Phoenicians, the first historical records of Caccamo come from the period of Norman domination. Located on the side of Monte San Calogero, Caccamo is well worth a small side trip.
Castello Caccamo is one of the best preserved castles in Sicily. Standing on a rocky spur, it follows the contours of the land and wraps around many levels.
The original castle was probably constructed in the 11th century, with continual modifications going up until the 17th.
The views from the castle are magnificent, and the castle itself has undergone a tremendous amount of internal restoration.
At this time, there was no entrance fee, a guided tour is offered gratis, but the majority of the castle interior is not available to the public.
Caccamo is approximately 10 kilometers uphill from the A 19 Autostrade, about 30 kilometers east of Palermo.
