Mussomeli, Sicily

The houses of Mussomeli are crammed together on a bare hillside, high enough to enjoy views of the surrounding area but low enough to cower in front of the Castello Manfredonico, perched as it is on a dramatic outcrop of rock.

The castello, constructed in the 13th Century, was heavily modified in later centuries. Only partially restored, the castello features a chapel made out of the old guardhouse, and a number of open pits that used to house prisoners.

The castello is open to the public for a fee of 4,000 lire.
