Campaign - Surprise At Pearl - Conclusion

Col. Larkin wiped the grime of battle off his face with the back of his hand, watching the sensor screen warily as spacecraft left Pearl Haven, four different sets headed on four different vectors. He suppressed a sigh; the weariness of an intense week’s fighting only now taking its toll.

A glance around the communication center showed the troops on duty were in a similar state; only adrenaline and stimulants kept them upright. More noticeable to the Colonel were the faces missing, especially Captain Wuss; reportedly executed by his own Commissar during the Dark Eldar raid. He’ll be missed at the bridge table.

Larking winced at the memory of the recent battles – first the Orks hit the planet and ripped up everything they faced, seizing this very com center. Above the hastily re-rigged monitors, shell holes from their primitive but effective weaponry pockmarked the walls. Once planet side, the greenskins kept rolling, smashing through a defensive line manned by the traitorous Space Wolves to loot the city proper.

As if that wasn’t enough, the Dark Eldar also attacked, their witches and sinister weapons casting fear among the populace. Their presence was suspected when a Space Wolf patrol failed to return, and confirmed when under the sights of the Irish Brigade’s lasguns.

A second Xenos force of Eldar made their presence known, only appearing briefly as they attempted to wrest the holy septum of Johann from the humans, the artifact unfortunately lost forever, destroyed in the ensuing battle.

And the Space Wolves, it would have been better if the Dark Eldar had been successful in their assignation attempt, Larkin mused. While guarding the Emperor’s shine, the Space Wolves, as well as the Xenos forces, had attacked the loyal Imperial Guard troops in an attempt to gain control of the ultimate weapon contained within. A close and pitched battle, the Irish Brigade had managed in the end to retain control, defeating the Wolves and watching as the aliens fought among themselves.

Maybe now, Larkin sighed, I’ll finally be able to get some sleep.

Notes:

The campaign was fought, and is finished. There were a lot of modifications to the original campaign tree due to weather (we received over 18 inches of snow starting 5 December, until Sunday 7 December 2003 - this meant we had to use the garage to store, well, cars!) and some extremely slow gaming.

As a note to anyone who might try this, I would recommend putting a time limit on games - Saturday day we had 3 games scheduled, but were only able to do one as it (and legitimately) dragged on and on.

We also had to modify the final huge battle due to similar time constraints; with the weather all participants had to leave early on Sunday meaning we had a 1 AM time cut off.

There are a lot of pictures, well over a hundred, and all will get posted, so keep checking back. As we add pictures and text for each battle, we will activate the mission as a hyperlink.
